3rd Squadron 5th Cavalry Memorial Fund
The deadline for for raising the funds is June 30, 2016

At our recent squadron meeting in Fredericksburg, VA a proposal was made to relocate our monument from Ft. Knox to
the new home of Armor and Cavalry located at Patton’s Park at Ft. Benning, Georgia.

Ricky Young, the Executive Director of the National Armor and Cavalry Heritage Foundation, presented its mission and plans.
Tentative plans for relocating our monument were also presented.

After much discussion, it was acknowledged that Fort Knox held considerable sentimental value.
It was clearly evident that with the movement of the armor school, the armor training center and the entire armor fleet
to Fort Benning that Fort Knox was no longer the home of armor.
Additionally the Patton Museum has gone through a major change in focus and has been given to the surrounding community and
saw the movement of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regimental Monument to Fort Benning.

A motion was made, seconded and voted on to relocate our monument to Fort Benning and
to include the completion of the original plan for five smaller troop monuments.

The motion was passed without opposition.

Following is an initial estimate of the costs to make this happen:

REMOVAL, SHIPPING, AND RECLAMATION OF LAND AT FT. KNOX                      $ 2,675.00

SITE PURCHASE, CONSTRUCTION OF A 16 FOOT DIAMETER CONCRETE
PAD, INSTALLATION OF ORIGINAL MONUMENT, AND SALES TAX            $ 8,400.00

CONSTRUCTION OF FIVE INDIVIDUAL TROOP MONUMENTS AND SALES TAX        35,640.00
    _________
                                                                                        TOTAL COST TO COMPLETE       $46,795.00

A committee to raise funds and to oversee the relocation was formed with Richard Wandoff appointed as chairman.
Committee members include someone from  each troop.

Our plan is to raise  funds through cash contributions, pledges, and the sale of granite pavers.

Our Squadron Association is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, and all contributions are tax deductible for those that itemize deductions.

Our committee will be communicating on an ongoing basis with ideas for raising funds.
One such idea would be in-lieu of giving/receiving gifts for birthdays and holidays, that a contribution be made to the memorial fund.
