A particular day of frustration occurred shortly later
in early March again across the river to the Southeast. We had been unsuccessfully
scouting for the better part of a week in a continuing effort being made
by the 9th Infantry Division to locate the 216th NVA Division suspected
to be in the area. It was well into the afternoon when we came across what
appeared to be a base camp of sorts with several freshly dug heavy weapon
pits and several camouflaged 'roof only' pole shelters. Under one pole
shelter there was a bamboo table with what appeared maps and other paper
work laid out. The location was in a partially defoliated area but was
so laid in among the terrain it was almost undetectable even at tree top
level. Fortunately or unfortunately no one was presently at home (it so
appeared) and landing was out of the question due to absence of space (and
nerve on my part). Anyhow, as I recall, the decision was to fix the coordinates
of the camp location, depart the area and contact the air force with the
suggestion for them or Army artillery to wait until late that night and
then Trash the area with fire power after Charles had returned for a good
nights sleep. We would then return to the area in the early AM to assess
the results and mop up. Sounded like a good sense plan, Right? Wrong! for
about an hour or so later while shut down and refueling at a near by watering
hole, we heard, to our total disgust, the rumbling of heavy ordinance precisely
from the very location reported. Unofficially the BDA report for this SNAFU
was120 Palm trees...cost...$ 6 Zillion dollars.
