Most of the maintenance people that D troop had were people that had been shot up or down one to many times. There was never any complaints about this practice.
When I first got to D troop in 68 the two armament guys were Dough Boy survivors and one had a two inch deep crease in his ass that he got from being shot while diving back into a slick as they were being pulled out of an LZ.
Well Ed Debow had already been hit three times and I spent one early morning arguing with him to stop flying because he had earned the right to slow down. He told me that three hits were a charm and nothing would happen to him. He got hit in the head that day and died.
That always falls into the category of "If I had tried harder maybe he would still be around". However a tour in Nam leaves alot of us with "Coulda hada, Woulda Hada , Shoulda Hada".
