An History Up-date from Scavenger, Don Armstrong
I was the one who has been doing the research at the National Archives for
several years before I moved up to New Hampshire.
I discovered the reason they did the flag swap in January 1971
was to have the 3/17th Cav leave with the 25th Inf.
division as a complete unit.
The plan was to then have the entire 3/5 Cav go home in the next increment.
I think that one was increment 10.
I still remember the people at the Center for Military History getting
pissed off when I told them about the designation change.
In response to your wondering about even swapping guide-ons.
I don't think they even did that.
I was looking at the 101st records and on the daily operations
reports they just show C 3/17th and the next day it was bracketed and
remarked at D trp 3/5 Cav.
At least I could find C 3/17th records at the National Archives.
We have never been able to find the D troop records because the unit was reactivated
at Ft Lewis in 72 and stayed there until 84.
Their unit historical officers culled out everything on D troop in Vietnam
and I have never been able to find out which GSA facility they are now stored at.
