Checks in
Off the top of my head I can relate a bit.
I actually ended up doing two tours in Vietnam 67-68
(3/5 Cav) and 70-71(G 2/75 Rangers)
I arrived in Vietnam about Sep 67 and was transferred
to D Troop, 3/5 Cav "Doughboys"
about Feb 68 - it was on an emergency replacement.
It seems the 3/5 was hit pretty hard and lost some
troops.
At that time I was a Sergeant E5.
Lt Robbins was the plt ldr and SSG Sawville was the
Plt Sgt.
On my first mission we were crossing a rice paddy
heading towards a village.
We were finding booby traps.
Lt. Robbins was - best I remember - 'playing' with
booby traps and one went off
and he was hit in the stomach.
Now all of this is a little vague as I really have
not thought a lot about it.
I was the third Squad leader. I bunked upstairs at
the opposite end of SSG Sawville.
I was with Larry Ousley and Chastine. (not
sure about the spelling)
I went on several missions but for my last
month in country I went south to Dong Tam to help prepare for the move.
I was Doughboy 3 (I think)!!
To be precise with my feeble memory I will have to
dig out some stuff for a refresher.
I do remember Flynn and Crawford and I actually did
my second tour with Larry Ousley.
Larry Ousley and I both joined G 2/75 at the
same time and I completed my second tour with him.
I retired as a Sergeant Major with 29 years in Oct
94.
I currently work at Intel as a Security Manager.
