Derek, I think the entry at
1430 hours on the 15th here is what you
might be referring to. The Universal Transverse Mercator map
coordinate at
XD817373 in Quang Tri Province on the Huong Hoa map in the Tiger Area of
Operations (Tiger AO). It is located exactly 2600 meters NE of
Lang Vei
there on or near QL-9. This is 5400 meters SW of the Khe Sanh air
strip.
The closest point to the Laotian border is 4850 meters to the SW.
An
OH58A, probably flying what they called in a White Team (Visual
Reconnaissance) was hit. I think this might have been the Aero
Scout
Platoon and I believe they called themselves the War Wagons.
I have no idea of what their call sign was or anything about the chopper
(other than it was an OH58A). There are a couple web sites that
have
records of choppers and with the date and type of chopper you should be
able to locate more about the chopper itself. I'll keep my eyes
open
myself on that one now. Barky was the forward observer (FO) in a
fixed
wing aircraft who coordinated the air strikes by marking positions with
smoke and calling in coordinates to the fast movers (jets). They
obviously
hit some type of fuel or oil tanks (POL = petroleum, oils, lubricants)
in
the area. During Lam Son 719 (previous operation to Montana
Mustang) the
U.S. stored a lot of fuel around this area for the cav units.
Anything you have to add to any of this, or even correct, I'd be glad to
know all about. I'd really like to know your Dad's name.
Hey, on this day, the first
entry, 1/C/1-11 (my unit) got on the
3/C/3-5 Cav tracks at FSB Anne and rode halfway down the road towards
Quang
Tri City to help get this RECON team out. I brought out the
body of Bruce
Edward Butcher with my assistant gunner.
Anyway, that's all
I can give you on the D/3-5 Cav event. I'd sure
be interested
in names of the personnel involved here for a database I'm
working on
and the story. How's your Dad doing?
