Hits Through The Windsheild
By Claude Stevens

The pilot was Lumpy Martin and the gunner was Whittier.  I don't know who the Peter Pilot was.  I talked with Lumpy Martin about this and he told me that he had seen a mounted .30 caliber machine gun out in front of the helicopter.  He thought it was the .30 cal that fired the round that went in the middle of the windshield pillar and wire bundle, but it wasn't.
We later found the bullet in the padding that is on the ceiling. It was an AK-47 round.
I was pretty sure it was the guy standing of to the left side who I shot while he was aiming at the pilot. I seemed that he would only fire one round off at a time. The guy on the ground in front of the aircraft with the 30. Cal was on automatic and he was eating our asses up.  If it wasn't for the ARVN pointing the guy
out he might have gotten the pilot.  The funny thing about it was I forgot all
about getting the two guys.  I was more worried about burning than any thing.
