Another “missing” piece of our history found.
The 191st arrived in Nam on 5-18-67, but we had no helicopters yet.
On 5-26-67 we sent Cpt. Kidd and his crew to fly with D Troop and that night during bad
weather they had a mid air collision and all were killed.
All of these guys were well known and liked by all. It was a wake up call for all of us.
In Dec. 67 I requested a transfer to 3/5th Cav for purpose of promotion and
was assigned to A Troop as 1SGT.
In Jan. the TET offensive broke out and we were called on to defend the Bien Hoa Air Base.
Between 0400 in the morning and 2300 that night we lost most of A Troop.
2 days later we were re-supplied to full troop level, both men and vehicles.
We loaded on LST's and were sent north to Da Nang, Hue and the Ashau Valley.
I left the Troop when we were split into 3 different positions, one Platoon with the 1st Cav, one with 101st, and one with a Marine unit. My base was the Ashau with the 101st.
I returned to the states on 5-18-68.
