Johnny Hutcherson Recalls

LT. Larry Maddy was the Doughboy Platoon leader. He replaced LT. Bert Robbins. I think Maddy was K.I.A. on his first mission.

I remember the story as this. While in the field, LT. Maddy was moving from one Squad. to another when he walked up on a V.C. hiding in the paddy. The V.C. shot Lt Maddy in the chest.

He had been in country for about 6 months but had not yet been assigned to a combat unit until he got to D Troop. I think he was killed the day Lt. Robbins left for home the States.

I was a LongKnife door gunner then and I remember the day he was killed. I remember it well because we had to wait for a replacement Doughboy before we could lift off on the mission.

One of their guys was really upset and he didn't want to go out that day. He'd had a very bad feeling. When guys got that feeling it always started me thinking , Oh No! I guess the guy's hunch was right on that day.

I hope this info helps.
