Atlanta Reunion 1999

Callison (C):   When did you get shot?

Schroder (S):  Feb 15 1970

We were making a medevac. We were picking up wounded and when we pulled out of there they opened up right underneath us. I remember when we were going in they said the area was secure.

It went right through the middle of my arm. I was out 7 days and on the 8th day I was flying again. I put a bandage on each side of my arm and that was about it.

(C):  Where did they medevac you to? Vinh Long or Binh Thuy?

(S):  Binh Thuy for 5 days then back to the unit for 2 days.

(C): What were you medevac-ing , American or ARVN?

(S): ARVN, about 12 of them, they were stacked up in the back. I had a jam on my M60. I was sitting there, I wasn’t strapped in and I was hit and I rolled over the seat and I landed on top of a couple guys. They just kind of moved over and made a hole for me.

They took me to Binh Thuy and took the dinks some place else. To a barge in the Mekong River I think.

Dennis Sorges:  I remember the day you got shot, I was a newguy then.  Powers? Or Powell, Long Knife 28 was the AC.  Lumpy Martin was the copilot.

On the 15th of February 1970 I was flying as the crewcheif on a UH1H Huey helicopter with tail number _______________.
We were near ___________ on a Medevac mission. Earlier we had been briefed that the area we were going to was “secure”. We had just picked up about 12 wounded ARVNs. They were just piled on the floor and as we were departing the LZ the VC opened up on us from right below. A bullet went right through the middle of my forearm. When I got hit I wasn’t strapped in and I was trying to clear a bad jam on my M60. After the bullet went through my arm I sort of rolled off the seat and landed on a couple of dinks on the floor. They just moved around and made a hole for me.

First aid ?
The pilot’s CW2?____________ and WO1 Lumpy Martin flew me directly to the hospital at Binh Thuy. Then they took the ARVNS on to their hospital barge in the Mekong River. I stayed at Binh Thuy for 5 days then returned to the unit for two days. On the eighth day I was flying again. I just stuck a bandage
on either side of my arm.
