January 31, 1971
D Troop 3/5th Cavalry and C Troop 3/17th Air Cavalry seem to Swap unit designations.
This was actually a "Transfer" of TO&E, Men and Equipment however it was all done on paper. Nothing was physically moved.

D Troop 3/5th "Charliehorse" is born.
Operating OH-58As as Scout Helicopters,
Quang Tri in I Corps is home.
Some former troopers remember wearing 9th Infanyry Division (Cookie) patches at the time.
Can anyone add to this memory?
You just can't be much more of a "Bastard" than that.
Unless of course you are "D 3/5" attached to the 101st Airborne Div.
But that comes later.

It is unclear to which major command Charliehorse belonged at this time.
Some copies of orders, any orders, would be very helpful.

But wait!
The rest of the 3/5th Cavalry was at Fort Lewis Washington and the Squadron's history
continued through "Desert Storm".

Please note that as part of the 3rd Squadron of the 5th Regiment, D Troop was truly the traditional, age old Reconnaissance Troop for the Squadron.

Not your typical "Air Cav" Troop.
We deployed to Vietnam in 1966 as part of a Squadron of "Black Knights"
attached to the 9th Infantry Division.
Aviation assets were left behind when the Squadron returned to CONUS.
For those un-enlightened.
D 3/5 Cav was really - - D Troop, 3rd Squadron of the 5th Armored Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Cavalry Division.
When the Squadron was fragged off to the 9th Infantry Division in 1966 to be part of the Riverine Force
it became the
"BASTARD CAV"
and you were part of it!
Welcome Home Brothers.
